It’s never easy to watch someone you love grow weak from illness, no matter how many years have passed since the diagnosis.
Leslie was a brilliant, independent, and career-focused woman diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at a young age. For more than 40 years, the disease slowly progressed, affecting her health, memory, and eventually requiring a wheelchair and help with daily tasks.
Leslie’s brother, Whitney, supported her with every aspect of her care throughout her MS journey, both physically and emotionally. No matter where she was living, whether in Florida or Michigan, he made sure to visit often, always willing to offer a helping hand or a listening ear.
When doctors said that Leslie needed to prepare for her end-of-life journey, Whitney’s support and presence remained strong. As her caregiver, he made the call to Arbor Hospice, knowing Leslie would receive exceptional care that is comprehensive, compassionate and available to everyone in the community.
During the months Leslie received Arbor Hospice’s care at the Gilbert Residence in Ypsilanti, Whitney witnessed how Leslie’s nurse, hospice aide, and social worker were attentive to her needs and ensured she was comfortable. Visits from pet therapy and music therapy were always a bright spot in the week, and Whitney and Leslie often found themselves singing songstogether long after the music therapy visits had ended. Even when Leslie’s memory faded, she was never short of words when it came to their favorite Beatles songs.
It was these everyday moments—singing their favorite songs or watching childhood TV shows—that meant the most to Whitney. With the help of Arbor Hospice, he saw Leslie’s personality shine bright even in her last days. He saw her comfortable, cared for, and at peace.
And for that, he will always be grateful.
For Whitney, having Arbor Hospice’s support meant he could be fully present with his sister during such a sacred time.
