Marjre’s Sunshine Day

Even when the days feel gray and heavy, the sun comes out and joy shines through.

Marjre, age 95, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and was non-verbal. For over a year, she received Arbor Hospice’s care alongside the loving care of her daughters, Karen and Linda. At every visit, Karen would ask, “Mom, what do you want to do today?” Even though there was never an answer, she knew her mom was listening.

Then one October day, something extraordinary happened. The sun was shining, the air was warm, and for the first time in months, Marjre spoke,

“I want to go lie in the grass.”

The message was clear, and Marjre’s care team sprang into action! Because of the generous support of people like you, Arbor Hospice can turn an ordinary wish into an extraordinary celebration to cherish and remember.

Marjre’s care team gathered pillows, blankets, and countless loved ones on the grass outside so Marjre could get her wish and so much more: a music therapist who played her favorite songs, pet companion dog Hercules provided comforting snuggles, her spiritual care advisor offered a blessing, companionship volunteers shared smiles and hugs, and her nurse and hospice aide supported Marjre through every moment. Joy and gratitude radiated from each person present.

It is often the small moments – like celebrating life and love in the warm October sunshine – that mean the most.
